Moon Landing Stamps Set of 5

US$2.90

Set of 5 Stamps. Plans for a commemorative stamp honoring the 1969 moon landing were extremely secretive. Few people were involved in the process and there was virtually no paperwork.

#1 "First Man on the Moon" US #C76 was issued on this day in 1969. On September 9, 1969, the US Post Office issued its first ever jumbo-sized commemorative stamp.

#2 "United States in Space A decade of Acheievement" 2Two 8-cent stamps commemorating a decade of space achievements were placed on sale August 2, 1971, at Kennedy Space Center, Florida, and Houston, Texas. They were placed on sale at two post offices rather than the usual one because of extraordinary interest in the stamps at the time of issuance.

#3 "Accomplishments in Space" On September 29, 1967, the U.S. Post Office issued its first attached pair of stamps to have a continuous design. The stamps, officially titled Accomplishments in Space, were issued to honor the 9th anniversary of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)

#4 "In the Beginning God" Postmaster General W. Marvin Watson, inspired by Apollo 8’s success, supported the idea of producing a stamp commemorating the voyage. The Post Office Department selected NASA’s color photograph 68-HC-870 for the 6-cent stamp design. This picture, which was taken on the mission while the men were approximately 240,000 miles from Earth, shows the moon’s surface with the Earth in the distance. The stamp featured the words “In the beginning God…”, the first words of Genesis that had been read by the astronauts.

#5 The 4 cent "Project Mercury" postage stamp was issued in 1962. The vintage postage stamp was issued in honor of the first American's orbit the Earth. On February 20, 1962, John Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth aboard the Friendship 7 capsule.
