US$0.00
The silver Wartime Jefferson Nickel was authorized unter the Second War
Powers Act on March 27, 1942.
Production began on October 8, 1942. The compostion of the five cent piece
was changed to 35% silver, 50% copper and 9% manganese from mostly nickel
and copper. This was a direct result of the nickel being a strategic metal and
needed for armaments and munitions.
The new nickel are readily identifiable as they have a large mint mark. The
mint marks are as follows:
P = Philadelphia
D = Denver
S = San Francisco
