Mercury Dime
The obverse (front) side of the coin features a profile of Lady Liberty wearing a winged cap to symbolize freedom
of thought. All U.S. coins at that time were required to feature a depiction of Miss Liberty. Nevertheless, it has
come to symbolize an image of the Roman God Mercury (God of trade and commerce). The analogy stuck and
the coin became known as the Mercury Dime.
Surrounding the face of Lady Liberty, is engraved the word “Liberty”. At the bottom and to the left of the neck are
